This decision was confirmed by the President of Ghana Athletics, Fuseini Bawa, following an emergency meeting of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Council on June 22, 2024.

Speaking to Graphic Online’s Rosalind K. Amoh, Bawa detailed the process that led to Ghana’s successful bid. Both Ghana and Botswana were invited to submit their proposals after the initial council meeting.

After swift consultations with key stakeholders, including Abdul-Majeed Bawa, the Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), and Ussif Mustapha, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ghana’s bid was approved.

“Following the approval, we were asked to present before the Executive Council,” Bawa said. Supported by Charles Osei Assibey, Vice President of Ghana Athletics, and the Deputy DG, Bawa made Ghana’s case. After presentations from both Ghana and Botswana, the Executive Council voted in favor of Ghana.

The Executive Council of the CAA, responsible for this decision, comprises the president, six vice-presidents representing the continent’s six zones, and the Chairperson of the Athletes’ Commission.

Ghana’s victory in securing the hosting rights for Africa’s premier track and field event in 2026 comes shortly after hosting the 2023 African Games, further solidifying its position as a key player in the continent’s sporting landscape.
