Ghanaian Business Icon Alhaji Asoma Banda Passes Away at 92

The renowned industrialist and businessman Alhaji Asoma Banda of Ghana died at the age of 92. An era for one of Ghana’s most powerful businessmen came to an end when he passed away early on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
Dele Momodu, a close associate and Nigerian businessman, confirmed the news with a moving Instagram tribute. Momodu appreciated his wife Baaba’s steadfast support throughout his last days and conveyed his admiration for Alhaji Banda.
“Such a privilege knowing this adorable couple, ALHAJI & EDWINA ASOMA-BANDA, in the last three decades… Today, the elephant has fallen… May ALLAH bless BAABA for keeping ALHAJI comfortable to the end. May ALLAH comfort the entire family, his wives, and children,” Momodu wrote.
In accordance with Islamic customs, Alhaji Banda is expected to be laid to rest the same day.

He highlighted how Alhaji Banda revolutionized the economy, especially through Antrak Airlines, which was essential in boosting Ghana’s internal air travel.
Jonah also noted the challenges that come with merging business and politics in Ghana, stating, “We have seen how difficult it can be when entrepreneurship intersects with politics. Alhaji Banda’s journey serves as a lesson for future generations.”
In addition to his commercial savvy, Alhaji Banda was respected as a mentor and historian who freely shared his knowledge of Ghana’s economic progress and future prospects.
“He never shied away from his humble beginnings. Instead, he wore them as a badge of honor, showing that determination and hard work can lead to greatness,” Jonah added.
