Alfred Okyere, a 23-year-old Ghanaian student who moved to Saskatoon, Canada, four months ago, unfortunately has lost his life after being stabbed.

Okyere, who came to Canada as an international student with the intention of creating a better future, was originally from Kumasi, Ghana.

Okyere had recently landed a part-time work at DSI Underground Canada, a mining supply firm in the city’s north industrial region, when Saskatoon police responded to an emergency call on the evening of Monday, January 20, 2025. Officers found the young man with severe stab wounds upon arrival and rushed him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Troy Francis Leclair, 53, has since been charged with first-degree murder by the authorities. On January 22, 2025, Leclair made an appearance in a provincial court as part of the lawsuit. Police have, however, stated that investigations are still underway and have withheld additional information about the events leading up to the tragedy.

Okyere was an active member of Saskatoon’s Church of Pentecost, which served as a center of worship for the city’s Ghanaian population. He is described by friends and family as a dedicated and diligent person who works part-time to pay for his schooling.

Family friend Alexander Osei-Owusu expressed the community’s sorrow:

“As many students these days, everybody is trying to find work here and there to get something to support their education. Alfred was no different. This is truly heartbreaking.”

To help his bereaved family in Ghana, Okyere’s friends have started a GoFundMe campaign in response to this terrible loss.

Authorities have stated that the case is still being investigated, even though they have not yet released all of the information related to the stabbing. Regarding the incident, DSI Underground Canada has not yet released any statements.

Both the Ghanaian and Canadian communities have been rocked by the tragic news, and many people are devastated by the loss of a young man with a bright future.
