Ghana’s 68th Independence: Modest Yet Powerful Presidential Ceremony
Ghana’s 68th Independence Day to Be Commemorated in a Modest Ceremony at the Presidency

On March 6, 2025, Ghana will celebrate its 68th Independence Day, but instead of the customary large-scale celebration at Black Star Square (Independence Square), there will be a smaller ceremony held at the Presidential Palace. In view of the current economic difficulties, President John Dramani Mahama has decided to cut back on wasteful government spending.
This update was made public by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of Government Communications, at a press conference at the Jubilee Lounge at Accra’s Airport. Due to the substantial financial burden, he added, the administration has also halted the practice of holding independence celebrations alternately in various regional capitals. For instance, the state spent almost 15 million Ghanaian cedis on the most recent national event, which took place in Ho.
Although Ghana’s independence is a significant event, President Mahama underlined that a more financially responsible approach to its observance is required given the current state of the economy.
The 68th Independence Day celebration at the Presidential Palace will include a senior high school student’s poetry reading, schoolchildren’s cultural acts, and a military guard of honor. Prominent chiefs, religious leaders, students, traders, and representatives of different political parties will be among the guests. The President will also give a ceremonial speech in which he will discuss the importance of the event and Ghana’s ongoing progress.
Other relevant memorial events, like the remembrance of the historic Christianborg Crossroads shooting incident on February 28, will take place in addition to the main celebration. As part of the festivities, the customary Presidential Awards for exceptional students will also be presented.
The government’s communications office intends to carry out a planned public relations and marketing campaign, highlighting the importance of Ghana’s independence celebrations and bolstering national unity, in order to guarantee nationwide engagement.
