The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an advisory warning residents to brace themselves for intense heatwaves as temperatures are expected to soar sharply over the next several days. As the sun comes closer to the equator, GMet predicts a spike in temperatures across the nation that will peak on March 20, 2024.Ghana is already experiencing extremely hot weather, which is partly due to Harmattan Season. GMet cautions that it is anticipated that the temperature would rise above the current conditions.

As per GMet, “On March 20, 2024, the sun is expected to be on the equator as it appears to be moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere. “In light of this, a rise in temperature is anticipated from this point through March or April of 2024.”

The predicted temperature ranges are extreme; maximums in the southern part are predicted to be between 33°C and 37°C, while even higher temperatures in the northern sections are predicted to be between 36°C and 42°C.

During this time of elevated temperatures, GMet advises the following safety measures to protect public health:

1. Keep Yourself Hydrated: To prevent dehydration, consume enough fluids

2. Minimise Outside Activities: To reduce exposure to intense heat, especially during peak hours.

3. Keep Up to Date: Consistently monitor meteorological conditions and alerts using GMet’s distribution channels.

4. Consult a Physician: If you are having health issues due to heat.

5. Seek Shade: Wear hats and umbrellas, especially from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when

the sun is at its strongest.

6. Observe Vulnerable Individuals: Pay particular attention to minors, the elderly, and people who already have medical issues.
