At a press conference on Thursday, May 30, 2024, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, revealed this initiative.

Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC), the company awarded the 5G license in Ghana, is tasked with launching internet services nationwide within the stipulated timeframe, with future expansion plans for other parts of Africa.

NGIC, a consortium comprising the Ghanaian government and seven partners including Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana, will spearhead the project. Notably, global tech giant Microsoft has also expressed interest in participating.

The company aims to establish the first 5G Mobile Broadband Shared Infrastructure Entity, building a nationwide 4G/5G network. The introduction of 5G services is poised to advance Ghana’s digital agenda in education, healthcare, and digital payments, fostering inclusivity and reducing the digital divide. Minister Owusu-Ekuful highlighted the multi-stakeholder nature of NGIC, with equity held by the Ghanaian public, Ascend Digital, K-NET, mobile operators, and private investors.

This partnership will bolster NGIC in deploying network infrastructure and services, catering to both enterprise and consumer markets with enhanced digital offerings.
