GRIDCo and ECG Announce Three-Week Power Interruptions Due to Reduced Gas Supply
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a planned three-week interruption in power supply, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” due to a significant reduction in gas supply from Nigeria.
The West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) indicated that the reduction in gas supply is a result of maintenance works by a supplier in Nigeria. This reduction affects the overall power generation capacity in Ghana, necessitating load management strategies during this period.
GRIDCo and ECG have warned that the maintenance work will likely lead to intermittent power outages across various parts of Ghana. They are working closely with other entities in the power sector to manage and optimize available resources to minimize the impact.
Both GRIDCo and ECG have assured the public that they are collaborating with key stakeholders to reduce the adverse effects of the gas supply reduction. Efforts are being made to balance the power load and maintain stability in the power grid during the maintenance period.
GRIDCo and ECG have committed to keeping the public informed about the situation and providing updates on the progress of the maintenance and its impact on power supply.
Ghana has faced several bouts of “dumsor” over the years, largely due to challenges in power generation and distribution. The term “dumsor” comes from the Akan language, meaning “off and on,” reflecting the frequent and unpredictable nature of power outages.

Extended periods of power outages can have significant economic impacts, disrupting businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and affecting daily life for residents. Industries that rely heavily on consistent power supply, such as manufacturing and service sectors, are particularly vulnerable.
Government and Power authorities are implementing strategic measures to mitigate the effect.
