GUTA President calls for amendments to labor laws in response to the influx of Chinese businesses, aiming to protect local enterprises and workers.

Dr. Joseph Obeng, President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), expressed concern over the increasing presence of Chinese retail businesses in the Ghanaian economy, urging for revisions to the country’s labor laws.

He stated that local businesses have lost approximately 40 percent of the market share to Chinese counterparts, highlighting that while local businesses account for only 20 percent of imports, foreign companies, including Chinese firms, control a significant 80 percent share of imported goods.

During an appearance on TV3’s Hot Issues program on Sunday, May 26, Dr. Obeng further attributed the rapid depreciation of the local currency to foreign business owners, particularly those with substantial capital importing large volumes of goods compared to Ghanaian traders.

He argued that Chinese businesses should be required to invest their capital in Ghana rather than importing goods directly from their parent companies in China, suggesting that certain financial thresholds should be met before permitting importation.

“Now our primary concern lies with the Chinese, and we are going to address it seriously,” he informed Keminni Amanor, host of Hot Issues.

“The Chinatown and China Mall, along with other Chinese companies here, are significantly impacting our business, capturing over 40% of the market.”

Furthermore, Dr. Obeng rejected the notion that local businesses overpriced their goods, leaving customers with no choice but to patronize Chinese businesses.
