A four-month-old infant has tragically died as a result of a major fire breakout in a slum near Kisseman Junction, near Achimota-Samodak. Over 20 temporary wooden buildings were burned in the early morning fire, which left many locals homeless and in misery. Witnesses reported that the fire broke out abruptly and quickly spread across the crowded wooden buildings. Despite residents’ best efforts, the fire swiftly spread to their houses and possessions. The newborn could not be saved, even though the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was notified and arrived quickly.

The GNFS’s Head of Public Relations, Divisional Officer Two (DO II) Desmond E. Ackah, issued an official statement outlining the rescue’s timetable. Within 12 minutes after receiving the emergency call at 4:12 a.m., firefighters from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations arrived on the site. Their prompt intervention stopped the fire from spreading to a warehouse and other neighbouring facilities. They managed to contain the fire by 5:02 a.m., but significant damage had already been caused.

Although the source of the fire is yet unknown, police have started an inquiry to find out where it started. The infant’s burned remains have been turned over to the police for additional investigation. Governmental and humanitarian organisations are now evaluating the damage and organising relief activities for the impacted families. In addition to dealing with the loss of their houses and belongings, the slum’s residents are grieving the death of the small child. To avoid such deaths in the future, many are advocating for better living standards and increased fire safety measures.
