IGP Urges Political Parties to Prepare for Both Victory and Defeat Ahead of 2024 Elections

The Ghana Police Service has issued a strong message to political parties and independent candidates in preparation for the highly anticipated 2024 general elections.

During a briefing on November 21, 2023, with representatives from all political parties, Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare stressed the importance of managing expectations and maintaining peace throughout the electoral process.

Dr. Dampare highlighted that while political competition would undoubtedly be fierce, it is crucial for all parties to understand that not everyone will emerge victorious. He emphasized the need for calm and measured reactions, regardless of the outcome. The IGP bluntly stated, “As you plan for your victory, plan for your defeat or endure your defeat,” encouraging politicians to be realistic about the results.

In his address, Dr. Dampare reassured the public that the police were well-prepared to handle any electoral violence with professionalism. He assured that law enforcement would take appropriate action, escalating or de-escalating situations as necessary, to ensure a peaceful environment for all citizens during the election process.

The IGP’s comments serve as a reminder that the upcoming elections should prioritize the nation’s stability and peace, with the ultimate goal being a win for Ghana as a whole, regardless of individual political victories.
