Kamala Harris Secures Democratic Nomination for President with Broad Delegate Support

Vice-President Kamala Harris has garnered sufficient backing from Democratic delegates to secure her position as the party’s presidential nominee, according to CBS News, a US partner of the BBC.

An Associated Press survey on Monday evening indicated that Harris had received endorsements from more than the 1,976 delegates required to clinch the nomination in the first round of voting. Expressing her gratitude, Harris stated she was “proud” to have gained “broad support” and eagerly anticipated formally accepting the nomination. Delegates, who are chosen to represent their electoral areas at the Democratic National Convention (DNC)—the party’s primary nominating event—play a crucial role in this process.

Although these endorsements are non-binding, if Harris maintains this level of support until the delegates cast their votes from August 1 to 7, she will officially become the party’s nominee. According to CBS, delegations from at least 27 states have declared their full support for Harris.

This wave of endorsements reflects the significant support Harris has received following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race on Sunday. Since Biden’s announcement, Harris’s campaign has seen a surge in donations amounting to millions of dollars, and prominent Democrats have rallied behind her bid for the nomination.

During a Monday evening address at her campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, Harris spoke to her staff, highlighting the 106 days remaining until Election Day and the hard work that lies ahead. She shared her vision for the country, emphasizing the stark contrast between her campaign and Donald Trump’s, stating she would willingly compare her record with his.

“Our campaign has always been about two different versions of what we see as the future of our country,” Harris remarked. “One focuses on the future, the other focuses on the past. Donald Trump wants to take our country backwards… We believe in a brighter future that makes room for all Americans.”

She also acknowledged President Biden’s accomplishments, expressing that serving as his vice-president was “one of the greatest honours of my life.” Harris reflected on the emotional journey, saying, “I love Joe Biden, and I know we all do,” and vowed to work tirelessly to earn the nomination and unite both the Democratic Party and the nation.

Before Harris took the stage, President Biden made his first comments since his withdrawal via phone call while isolating due to Covid-19. He expressed his gratitude to his aides, urging them to “embrace” Harris, whom he described as “the best.”

“I know yesterday’s news was surprising and hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing to do,” Biden told his team. He acknowledged the dedication and hard work they had put into his campaign, promising, “I’m not going anywhere” and committing to remain “fully engaged” in the campaign.

Biden encouraged his team to transfer the dedication they showed him to Harris’s campaign, emphasizing the continued need to “save this democracy” and highlighting the threat he believes Trump still poses to the nation. He expressed hope that his team would support Harris with the same passion they had shown him.

Biden is expected to return to the White House on Tuesday afternoon after completing his self-isolation in Delaware.

Harris’s journey to becoming the Democratic nominee has been marked by significant support and endorsements, reflecting her strong position within the party. Her vision for America’s future contrasts sharply with Trump’s, emphasizing inclusivity and progress. With Biden’s endorsement and the backing of a substantial number of delegates, Harris is poised to lead the Democratic charge into the upcoming election, promising to unite the party and the country under a banner of progress and unity.
