Pop sensation Katy Perry is about to make a huge leap—this time, into space—beyond the realm of music. In a historic step for both commercial space travel and the portrayal of women in aerospace missions, the singer will be among the first all-female crew to board Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket.

Five successful women accompany Perry on this historic journey: film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, CBS presenter Gayle King, and Lauren Sánchez, media personality and Jeff Bezos’ fiancée. The launch window for the completely autonomous spacecraft is set to open at 8:30 AM local time (14:30 BST), with the spacecraft departing from West Texas. Reaching more than 100 kilometers (62 miles) above Earth—the internationally acknowledged border of space known as the Kármán Line—the complete suborbital flight is anticipated to take around 11 minutes.

After launch, the six-person capsule will separate from the 60-foot rocket, giving passengers a brief taste of weightlessness before returning to Earth via parachuting. About two kilometers away from the launch site, the rocket booster will land vertically and under control. Because New Shepard is fully autonomous, passengers are not needed to operate the vehicle. Despite being short, the trip makes a strong statement about how women are portrayed in space travel.

In a heartfelt social media post, Perry reflected on her childhood dreams, saying, “If you had told me that I would be part of the first-ever all-female crew in space, I would have believed you. Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child. Although we didn’t grow up with much, I never stopped looking at the world with hopeful wonder.”

Since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s solo voyage in 1963, this is the first all-female spaceflight. Blue Origin highlights how innovative this mission is in terms of sustainability and space tourism, in addition to its gender representation. With the booster going back to the ground for subsequent launches, the New Shepard system is reusable, which eventually lowers costs.

However, the growth of space tourism has not been welcomed by everyone. Critics contend that the cost of tickets makes it an exclusive luxury available exclusively to the wealthy. Blue Origin has not revealed the exact price of the tickets, but it is a very elite venture, requiring a $150,000 deposit for a seat. Concerns have also been expressed by environmentalists regarding the rocket emissions and their possible effects on the ozone layer. According to a 2022 study, the warming effect of rocket soot may be 500 times larger than that of aviation emissions.

While some, like actress Olivia Munn, have criticized the optics of such high-cost ventures, others, including astronaut Tim Peake and physicist Professor Brian Cox, defend the importance of space travel. They argue that the innovations and knowledge gained from these missions can benefit life on Earth, especially in combating climate change and advancing science.

Blue Origin, founded in 2000 by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, aims to revolutionize space accessibility. In addition to its tourism missions, the company is also working on long-term space infrastructure, reusable rockets, and even lunar landing systems.

As Katy Perry and the all-women crew gear up for their space adventure, their mission stands as a symbol of how far both women and commercial space exploration have come—and where they’re headed next.
