Kenya’s President Withdraws Tax Plan After Deadly Protest
In response to widespread and violent protests, Kenyan President William Ruto has announced the withdrawal of a contentious finance bill that proposed significant tax hikes.
The protests, which culminated in parliament being set ablaze on Tuesday, resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people, as reported by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).
In a national address, President Ruto acknowledged the public’s overwhelming opposition to the bill. “I concede,” he stated, affirming that he will not sign the bill into law.
This decision marks a significant shift as the bill had faced mounting criticism and resistance from various sectors of society, leading to the unrest.
The protests underscored the intense dissatisfaction among Kenyans regarding the proposed tax increases, which many feared would exacerbate the economic hardships facing the nation.
