Kintampo Welcomes Ghana’s Bold New Public University
Kintampo to Host Ghana’s Newest Public University: University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences Set for Launch in Bono East

In a daring attempt to increase access to higher education throughout Ghana, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has revealed plans to build a brand-new university in the Bono East Region. Kintampo is anticipated to be the location of the proposed university, which will be known as the University of Health, Agriculture and Life Sciences (UHALS). The minister stated that when the House meets again later this year, a bill to create the institution will be brought before Parliament.
The government’s overarching goal to guarantee that every Ghanaian area has at least one public university is reflected in this announcement. Institutions in and around Kintampo already have the potential to act as the university’s pillars, Mr. Iddrisu underlined.
President John Mahama’s goal to decentralize higher education and bring chances for advanced study closer to underprivileged people is in line with this growth. The statement was given at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Accra during the inauguration of the newly established governing council.
Under the direction of former Nandom MP and former Defense Minister Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor, the council has been tasked with guiding the university to become one of Ghana’s preeminent establishments. In addition to the new university plans, Minister Iddrisu revealed the government’s intent to revert the names of public universities that were changed under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He clarified that the aim is to restore historical integrity and identity to these institutions, while also recognizing individuals who merit national honors. The minister questioned the precedent of arbitrary name changes in global academic systems and reaffirmed that those who have contributed significantly to the nation would still be honored appropriately.
This dual announcement of a new university and the reversion of institutional names marks a significant shift in Ghana’s educational landscape. It underscores the current administration’s commitment to preserving history while promoting inclusivity and equitable access to higher education.
