Korle Bu Temporarily Halts Acceptance of Dead Bodies for Six Weeks Due to Cold Room Renovation

Due to ongoing renovations to its mortuary cool room, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Ghana’s largest tertiary healthcare facility, has placed a temporary halt to the acceptance of new dead bodies and Brought-in-Dead (BID) cases. Enhancing service delivery and upholding high standards of facility management are the goals of the six-week ban.

Assuring the public that the renovation is necessary to improve mortuary services, hospital administration apologized for the temporary restriction in an official statement issued on February 3, 2025. The hospital stressed that cases that originate within Korle Bu itself will not be subject to the restriction.

The statement asked grieving families to quickly arrange for the transport or burial of bodies that have been at the mortuary for a long time. Families were specifically urged to move their departed loved ones to other facilities or to move on with funeral plans if they had been in storage for three to six weeks or longer.

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your cooperation as we strive to improve our services,” the statement read.

The public was reassured by Korle Bu Teaching Hospital that the renovations are required to maintain operating effectiveness and guarantee the best possible service. The hospital has urged the public to be patient with them during this transition and is still dedicated to offering high-quality medical care.
