Kumasi Central Market traders threaten direct action over unfinished site. Stay informed on the latest developments regarding this issue
Traders at the Kumasi Central Market have issued a stern warning to the authorities, stating their intention to occupy the uncompleted market site with their goods and commodities if all barricades surrounding the site are not removed by May 19.
Expressing their frustration, the traders highlighted their disappointment in the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government’s alleged negligence and failure to complete the second phase of the Kumasi Central Market project.
The project has been at a standstill for over a year and a half due to the renegotiation of a loan agreement following Ghana’s financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Conducting business in unfavorable conditions, the traders feel neglected by the government and believe their pleas have been ignored. In response, they have resolved to stage a five-day demonstration to demand the resumption of work on the project.

In a petition dated May 14, the traders issued an ultimatum to Contracta Construction Company Limited, the firm responsible for the project, demanding the removal of all barricades within seven days or face repercussions. Additionally, they are in discussions with the Ghana Police Service to secure permission for their demonstration, citing Article 21(1d) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.
The escalating tension reflects the urgency and frustration among traders who have been eagerly awaiting the completion of the market project. As the deadline approaches, stakeholders are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a swift resolution to avoid further disruptions to business activities in the area.
