Kwabena Boateng Emerges Victorious in the Ejisu By-Election
Mr. Kwabena Boateng, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has emerged triumphant in the Ejisu by-election, clinching 27,782 votes, constituting 55.8% of the total ballots cast.
His closest contender, Independent Candidate Mr. Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, secured 21,534 votes, amounting to 43.3% of the total votes.
The by-election, triggered by the passing of Member of Parliament and Deputy Finance Minister Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah on March 7, 2024, witnessed a keenly contested race despite a relatively low voter turnout.
The campaign period was marked by intense competition, particularly between Mr. Boateng and Mr. Aduomi, the latter being a former three-time NPP Member of Parliament for the constituency who stood as an Independent Candidate.
Throughout the campaigning process, allegations of vote buying were raised against Boateng’s campaign, prompting scrutiny and intervention from the Electoral Commission. In response to these allegations, the Commission took action by removing two temporary staff members following the circulation of a viral video purportedly showing them accepting a bribe during the Ejisu by-election.
Other candidates in the electoral race included Beatrice Boakye of the Liberal Party, who garnered 140 votes (0.3%), Esther Osei of the Convention People’s Party with 0.2%, Independent Candidate Joseph Agyemang with 222 votes (0.2%), and Atakora Joseph with 23 votes (0.0%).
