Legendary Osibisa Saxophonist Teddy Osei Passes Away at 88
Renowned Ghanaian musician and saxophonist Teddy Osei, a founding member of the iconic Afro-rock band Osibisa, has passed away at the age of 88.
Bessa Simons, President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), confirmed his death, stating that the legendary artist died on the morning of Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Teddy Osei developed an early interest in music, experimenting with various instruments as a child. His passion for music led him to take up the saxophone during his college days in Sekondi, where he formed his first band. After completing his education, Osei worked briefly as a building inspector before founding the band “The Comets.” This group gained local recognition, producing music inspired by Ghana’s highlife genre.
In 1962, Osei moved to London, supported by a government grant to study at a private music and drama school. Unfortunately, a political regime change in Ghana cut short his studies, but this did not deter him. In 1969, he co-founded Osibisa, a groundbreaking Afro-rock band that gained international fame throughout the 1970s. Osibisa’s fusion of African rhythms with rock captivated global audiences and earned them a lasting legacy.
Before Osibisa, Osei also formed the group “Cat’s Paw,” which performed soul music across Europe. This group included Sol Amarfio and Mac Tontoh, who later became integral members of Osibisa. Over the years, Osei’s creativity and determination left an indelible mark on world music.
Osei’s journey from Ghana to international fame serves as an inspiration, showcasing his resilience and talent. His contributions to the global music scene through Osibisa remain unparalleled, cementing his place in history as a music legend.
