Over 450 senior government officials, including important ministries, have been suspended by Liberian President Joseph Boakai for not declaring their assets as required by law, demonstrating his strong anti-corruption stance. The impacted persons, which include the health and education ministers and special envoys for investment and tourism, will be off duty without compensation for a month or until they fulfill the asset declaration requirement.

In order to maintain accountability and openness in the government, Liberia’s Code of Conduct for Public Officials places a strong emphasis on the asset declaration requirement. Not adhering to this rule jeopardizes national efforts to advance moral governance, stressed President Boakai, who took office last year with a promise to end corruption.

The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) published a list of all 457 officials who have not fulfilled their legal obligation, reiterating that asset declaration is a fundamental requirement for public officers both before assuming office and upon leaving government positions.

“Public officials are reminded that declaring assets is not just a legal necessity but a key measure in restoring public confidence in our governmental institutions,” President Boakai stated.

There have been mixed responses to the move to suspend these officials. Although other analysts, like as political analyst Abdullah Kiatamba, support the president’s tough stance, they argue that practical concerns may have contributed to the asset reports’ delay. Civil society organizations like Solidarity and Trust for a New Day have condemned the measure as inadequate and have viewed the one-month suspension as a symbolic gesture rather than a meaningful sentence.

Last year, President Boakai demonstrated his commitment to responsible governance by voluntarily reducing his salary by 40%. This decision was made in an attempt to set an example and show solidarity with Liberians who have been struggling economically.

During the previous George Weah administration, the Liberian government was widely accused of corruption and poor management, which led to widespread protests as living costs rose. Boakai’s government intends to buck this trend by enacting more robust accountability procedures and encouraging transparency.

Following the announcement, some of the suspended officials were seen visiting the LACC offices in an effort to fulfill the asset reporting obligation. This implies that the president’s hard stance may be taking effect right away.

Although it is unclear whether this widespread ban will lead to long-term changes or serve only as a warning, one thing is certain: the Liberian government is coming under increasing pressure to maintain transparency and regain public trust. The ongoing battle against corruption in Liberia remains a critical litmus test for Boakai’s leadership.
