Mahama Appoints Bold New Leaders for FIC, NHIA, GWL & NDPC
President Mahama Appoints New Leadership for NDPC, FIC, GWL, and NHIA

The National Development Planning Commission’s (NDPC) new chairman is seasoned development economist Dr. Nii Moi Thompson. The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) will have Albert Kwadwo Twum Boafo, a specialist in finance, as its acting CEO. In the medical field, Dr. Victor Bampoe, a physician and former Deputy Health Minister, has been appointed CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA). Adam Mutawakilu will also take over as Ghana Water Limited’s (GWL) interim managing director, guaranteeing the nation’s water supply will continue to operate efficiently.
Significance of the Appointments
Acting Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu signed a statement from the President’s office emphasising the strategic significance of these appointments. While Mr. Boafo awaits the FIC Board’s reconstitution, Dr. Thompson’s position is contingent upon discussions with the Council of State. The President’s goals of improving public service effectiveness, fostering economic stability, and fortifying governance are all in line with these actions.
NDPC and Ghana’s Development Agenda
Dr. Thompson will collaborate closely with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the Minister of Finance, and regional representatives in his capacity as Chairman of the NDPC. He is responsible for ensuring sustainable economic policies and directing long-term national development strategies. During the creation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr. Thompson oversaw Ghana’s technical delegations to the UN and was instrumental in incorporating the goals into Ghanaian national policies.
New FIC Leadership and Financial Oversight
The government’s dedication to fighting financial crimes is demonstrated by Albert Boafo’s appointment to the FIC. His engineering and financial background will be crucial to improving security and transparency in Ghana’s financial industry. Mr. Boafo is qualified to head the national centre that keeps an eye on and analyses financial transactions linked to money laundering, terrorist financing, and other economic crimes because of his broad academic background, which includes degrees in Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Finance.

GWL and Resource Management
Adam Mutawakilu, Ghana Water Limited’s newly appointed interim managing director, has promised to improve the nation’s water supply services. Even though he might not have a direct expertise in water management, GWL will benefit from his experience in energy, finance, and governance. Enhancing access to drinkable water, especially in underprivileged areas, would be made possible in large part by Mr. Mutawakilu’s leadership. His nomination is in line with President Mahama’s pledge to improve Ghana’s infrastructure for basic services.
NHIA’s New Leadership for Healthcare Advancement
Dr. Da Costa Aboagye has been replaced as NHIA’s CEO by Dr. Victor Bampoe. Dr. Bampoe is in a good position to improve Ghana’s healthcare system because of his extensive experience in public health financing and policy. Dr. Bampoe, a former Deputy Minister of Health, has worked extensively with global health organisations such as the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the Global Fund. It is anticipated that his leadership will fortify national health policies and increase access to healthcare.
A New Era of Governance and Service Delivery
The hiring of these seasoned experts indicates a renewed emphasis on sound public service delivery, economic stability, and efficient government. Ghana continues to place a high priority on better access to basic services, sustainable growth, and financial integrity under President Mahama’s direction. Significant advancements in national planning, financial stability, healthcare, and water resource management are anticipated as a result of these crucial appointments.
