John Mahama Promises New National Theatre for Kumasi in 2024 Development Plan

Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a bold promise to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi, Ghana’s cultural heart, should the National Democratic Congress (NDC) win the upcoming elections. This move is part of Mahama’s larger plan to strengthen Ghana’s cultural infrastructure, focusing on enhancing the arts sector.
The new theatre, to be located in Kumasi, is envisioned as a cultural landmark for the Ashanti Region. It is expected to serve not only as a space for traditional and modern performances but also as a catalyst for promoting local talent and cultural exchange. Mahama emphasized that this initiative would help foster a deeper connection with Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and provide more opportunities for artists across the country.
In addition to the Kumasi theatre, Mahama has also pledged to rehabilitate the existing National Theatre in Accra. His plan includes modernizing the facility to support a wider range of performances and improve overall conditions for artists. This would create a more conducive environment for the creative arts to thrive, stimulate cultural tourism, and ultimately contribute to economic growth.
Through these initiatives, Mahama is reaffirming his commitment to the arts as an essential part of Ghana’s identity and national development. The promise to build the new National Theatre in Kumasi and revamp the Accra theatre reflects his belief in the transformative power of culture and its role in shaping the future of the nation.
