President John Dramani Mahama has named new chiefs for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Prisons Service, and Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) as part of an ongoing push to modernize Ghana’s security system. This most recent action comes after Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Commissioner of Police (COP), was sworn in as the next Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The appointments were described in a statement released by the Presidency on Friday, March 14, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President:

DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie replaces Isaac Kofi Egyir as Director-General of the Ghana Prisons Service.

  • DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong takes over from Julius A. Kuunuor as Chief Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service.
  • DCI Samuel Basentale replaces Kwame Asuah Takyi as Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service.

President Mahama’s larger plan to update and improve the efficiency of Ghana’s security forces includes this significant reorganization. The modifications were made the day after Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s replacement as IGP, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, was sworn in.

Following discussions with the Council of State, the Presidency stressed that these selections were made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution. The government hopes to address changing security issues, increase accountability, and improve operational efficiency by putting this restructure into place.

The newly appointed security chiefs are expected to tackle key institutional challenges and drive impactful reforms.

  • Prisons Service: Under the leadership of DDGP 3 Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, efforts will likely focus on reducing prison overcrowding, enhancing inmate rehabilitation programs, and improving prison conditions.
  • Fire Service: DCFO Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong’s tenure is expected to bring improvements in fire prevention strategies, public education on fire safety, and modernization of firefighting equipment.
  • Immigration Service: With border security and illegal migration being major national concerns, DCI Samuel Basentale’s leadership is anticipated to strengthen enforcement operations and streamline immigration processes.

President Mahama is making it clear that he is committed to changing Ghana’s security architecture by appointing four new top security leaders in as few as two days. It is anticipated that these changes will promote more professionalism, improve public safety protocols, and guarantee that Ghana’s security establishments are better prepared to tackle contemporary issues.

Stakeholders and citizens will be closely monitoring the newly appointed officials’ performance in their positions to see how these reforms will result in noticeable enhancements to public safety and national security.
