Osu Castle to Become Ghana’s Premier Tourist Destination – President Mahama Unveils Plans in SONA 2025
A bold plan to turn the historic Osu Castle into a top tourism destination has been unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama. The President underlined his government’s commitment to leveraging the cultural and historical significance of the Osu Castle in order to develop Ghana’s tourism industry during his 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament.
President Mahama claims that the construction project will significantly improve the Osu Castle, which was once the seat of administration, making it a popular tourist destination both domestically and abroad.
“We will redevelop the Osu Castle and its surrounding areas into a major tourism hub. The project will feature a pedestrian-friendly zone complete with an arts and crafts market, jewelry and gold trading centers, and other cultural attractions. This approximately 22-acre site will serve as a dynamic and engaging destination for tourists,” he stated.
The president also reaffirmed his administration’s intention to use a major tourist project called “The Black Star Experience” to establish Ghana as the entry point to Africa for the world’s diaspora. In partnership with the commercial sector, diplomatic missions, and other government ministries and agencies, this program seeks to highlight Ghana’s rich cultural, historical, and artistic legacy.
“Our goal is to establish the Black Star Experience as a distinct and uniquely Ghanaian tourism brand. As part of this initiative, we will introduce the Pan-African Month, which will highlight the country’s deep-rooted cultural heritage and its significance to people of African descent worldwide,” President Mahama explained.
President Mahama also underlined how Ghana’s standing as a democratic and peaceful country makes it a desirable location for high-profile events, corporate conferences, and international summits.
“We must capitalize on this advantage to strengthen our global standing as the Centre of the World and maximize the economic benefits of tourism,” he remarked.
With these ambitious plans, the government is set to make Ghana a must-visit destination for cultural tourism, creating economic opportunities and promoting national heritage on the global stage.
