Mahama Urges Better Pay & Benefits for Ghana Police
Mahama Advocates for Improved Welfare of Police Officers at IGP Swearing-In

Enhancing the welfare of Ghana Police Service officers is essential to maintaining effective law enforcement and national security, according to President John Dramani Mahama, who has reiterated this need.
President Mahama recognized the commitment and sacrifices involved in law enforcement during the swearing-in ceremony of Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the recently appointed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), held at the Jubilee House on March 14, 2025. In order to increase morale and operational performance, he emphasized the necessity of improving their working circumstances.
“Our officers must receive competitive remuneration, be adequately housed, and have access to quality healthcare and psychological support. A well-motivated police force translates into a more effective and professional service,” President Mahama stated.
His comments, which acknowledged that police personnel work under extreme pressure and risk, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving police welfare. He emphasized that enhanced service delivery will be greatly aided by higher wages, better housing, and full health coverage, including mental health assistance.
The Ghana Police Service is undergoing change as a result of the retirement of former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, which coincides with the desire for better police welfare. Following discussions with the Council of State, Christian Tetteh Yohuno was appointed on March 13, 2025, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, and he formally took office as the next IGP on March 14, 2025.
As he takes over leadership, IGP Yohuno is expected to drive key reforms aimed at strengthening professionalism within the police force and enhancing security operations nationwide.
