John Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for greater government investment in Ghana’s creative arts sector. Speaking to industry members on Friday, June 7, Mahama emphasized his commitment to revitalizing the sector should he be elected president in the upcoming elections.
In his address, Mahama acknowledged the numerous challenges facing the creative arts community and promised to work collaboratively to address them.
Reflecting on his previous tenure as President, he highlighted initiatives that were launched under his administration but have since stalled.
“We are going to find those solutions together,” Mahama assured the audience. “In the past, we tried to assist by providing cars to some of you, as many were struggling to get around. This initiative was intended to be rolled out in phases to protect your dignity and support your work.”
Mahama expressed disappointment that this program, among others, had not been continued by the current government, noting reports of some vehicles being seized. “Unfortunately, we left office, and the program has not been continued. It’s also unfortunate that some of the cars were taken back from you,” he remarked.

Drawing inspiration from Ghana’s first president, Mahama highlighted the historical importance of the arts. “Nkrumah believed in creative arts and invested in it. I believe the government must also put money into the creative arts sector,” he said.
Mahama’s vision for the creative arts includes not only financial investment but also a strategic focus on enhancing the sector’s infrastructure and providing resources to nurture talent. He urged the current administration to recognize the value of the arts in national development and to take immediate steps to support it.
As the 2024 elections approach, Mahama’s pledge resonates with many in the creative community who have felt overlooked. His call for renewed focus and investment underscores the potential of the creative arts to contribute significantly to Ghana’s cultural and economic landscape.
By prioritizing the arts, Mahama hopes to foster a vibrant cultural scene that reflects Ghana’s rich heritage and supports the livelihoods of those within the industry.
