Mahama Vows to Revisit Cecilia Dapaah Corruption Case if he Assumes Office
Former President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his determination to reopen investigations into alleged corruption and graft involving Cecilia Dapaah if he wins the upcoming election.
In a tweet from his official Twitter account, Mr. Mahama declared, “My government will reopen investigations into alleged acts of corruption and graft in the Cecilia Dapaah case.”
This statement follows recent developments where the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) referred the case to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for inquiries into possible money laundering. However, the Attorney-General’s office advised against initiating such investigations, citing insufficient evidence for the OSP’s request.
In a letter to the Executive Director of EOCO, Chief State Attorney Evelyn D. Keelson highlighted that the OSP’s investigations did not uncover evidence of corruption, corruption-related offenses, or procurement breaches against the suspects in the Cecilia Dapaah case. The letter also mentioned that the OSP returned money and other assets retrieved from the suspects, leading to their release.
Furthermore, the Attorney-General’s office noted that the OSP’s letter to EOCO did not provide a basis for suspicion regarding money laundering and structuring, making it challenging to determine the grounds for such allegations. Additionally, the OSP did not furnish a copy of its report on collaborative investigations conducted with the FBI.
Mahama’s tweet indicates his intention to reexamine the case and pursue further investigations if he assumes office, despite the Attorney-General’s advice against probing money laundering allegations in this matter.
The Cecilia Dapaah case has attracted significant public attention, with various stakeholders closely monitoring developments surrounding the allegations. As the election approaches, Mr. Mahama’s pledge to reopen the case adds another dimension to ongoing discussions about corruption and accountability in Ghana’s political landscape.
