Mahama Vows to Revive Stalled Takoradi Market Project
President Mahama Pledges to Revive Stalled Takoradi Market Circle Redevelopment Project

The stalled Takoradi Market Circle reconstruction project is important for increasing economic activity and improving market facilities in the Western Region, and President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to seeing it through to completion. The President promised locals and traders during a site visit that his administration will move quickly to restart and finish the project.
“We are here to inspect and assess the status of the project. We will return to Accra and on Friday, we will meet the contractor and the Minister of Finance to discuss how to complete the Takoradi Market Circle Redevelopment Project. Soon, the contractor, engineers, and workers will be on-site to ensure its completion,” he stated.
Since 2020, the Takoradi Market Circle, a crucial commercial centre in the Western Region, has been undergoing renovations after former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo performed a sod-cutting ceremony. The Italian construction company Messrs Contracta Costruzioni Italia SLR was in charge of the project, which had an initial completion date of 2023 and was estimated to cost €48 million. However, construction has stopped because of logistical and financial limitations.

The new Takoradi Market Circle will have 2,408 contemporary shops, 33 eateries and food courts, a bulk breaking area, visitor parking and necessary facilities including a police and fire station, a post office, a clinic, an administrative office and a nursery when it is finished.
Furthermore, facilities for waste separation, banks and financial organisations, and market employees’ changing areas have been included. The project’s resuscitation is anticipated to boost regional economic development by generating thousands of jobs and greatly enhancing market conditions for traders and consumers.
