Following its hacking on Monday, March 17, 2025, former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has successfully recovered access to his X (previously Twitter) account. His account was taken over by thieves in order to advertise a phony cryptocurrency scheme.

President Mahama verified that his staff collaborated closely with X’s support team to restore his account in an official tweet on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

“My team has restored my account, working with the X support team. Thank you for your enquiries and offers to assist,” he posted.

Due to the vulnerability, hackers were able to advertise a phony cryptocurrency project called “Solana Africa” using Mahama’s verified account. The former president was allegedly developing a blockchain-based infrastructure for free cross-border payments throughout Africa, according to the fraud.

Investors suffered financial losses when, shortly after the advertising, the enterprise fell apart in what seems to be a traditional “rug pull” fraud.

Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) confirmed in an official statement that investigations were being conducted in the wake of the security incident. In order to find the culprits and improve online security, the CSA promised the public that they were working with X’s security team and other cybersecurity partners.

Concerns regarding the digital security of well-known public figures have been rekindled by the hacking event. Cyber experts caution that important people’s and political leaders’ social media accounts continue to be popular targets for highly skilled hacker groups.

Mahama’s team has advised the public to ignore any fake posts made during the hack, even though it is still unknown who was responsible for the attack.

Key Takeaways:

  • John Dramani Mahama’s X account was hacked and used to promote a fake crypto investment scheme.
  • The fraudulent initiative, “Solana Africa,” collapsed, leading to investor losses.
  • Mahama’s team worked with X support to recover the account.
  • Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority is investigating the incident.
  • The breach raises concerns over cyber threats targeting high-profile individuals.
