Mahamoud Ali Youssouf Named AU Commission Chairperson
Mahamoud Ali Youssouf Elected as Chairperson of AU Commission: A Milestone for Djibouti

The election of Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs Minister, as the new Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission is a historic win for the country. This accomplishment follows a close-fought and intense struggle that continued into the seventh round of voting. After initially lagging behind Kenya’s Raila Odinga in the earlier rounds, Youssouf eventually received 33 votes, exceeding the required majority.
For Djibouti, a strategically important country in the Horn of Africa, Youssouf’s victory represents a major turning point. Having been Djibouti’s Foreign Minister since 2005, the seasoned diplomat brings a wealth of international diplomatic expertise to the position. Notable roles throughout his career include serving as ambassador of Djibouti to Egypt and serving as a minister under three different presidents.
The electoral process was a contentious affair. Odinga received the most votes (20), followed by Youssouf (18) and Richard Randriamandrato (10), who was from Madagascar. Youssouf, however, picked up speed in later rounds and progressively closed the distance with Odinga. By the third round, Youssouf was almost certain to win the title, and Odinga was out. With thirty-three votes, Youssouf won the coveted slot in the final round.
Youssouf will take over as the new Chairperson of the AU Commission, replacing Moussa Faki Mahamat of Chad, for a four-year tenure. It is expected that under his leadership, Africa’s development and diplomatic policies will be influenced, enhancing the continent’s voice on the international scene.
Youssouf’s reputation as a diplomatic leader with extensive expertise in promoting international relations is further enhanced by Djibouti’s strategic importance as a major partner for Western countries. The African Union’s future policies and projects are anticipated to be shaped during his tenure, furthering the continent’s unity and advancement on a number of fronts.
