After an outage that disrupted internet connectivity across parts of West Africa since March 14, 2024, MainOne, a leading provider of undersea fiber optic internet connectivity, has announced the successful completion of repairs to its submarine cable.

The outage, which also impacted other subsea communication cables in the region, resulted in significant disruptions to banking and telecommunication services in countries such as Ghana and Nigeria.

“Through close collaboration with regional partners, maintenance providers, vessel owners, and permitting authorities, MainOne has finalized the necessary repairs to its submarine cable system. This achievement is a testament to the diligent efforts of all stakeholders involved, and we have resumed regular operations, ensuring the utmost integrity of our submarine cable,” the statement read.

“Throughout this period, MainOne provided restoration capacity and rerouted traffic on its network to minimize the impact on our customers.”

MainOne expressed gratitude for the swift resolution, acknowledging the efforts of partners, vessel owners, permitting authorities, and the patience of customers during the outage.

“We deeply appreciate the support and collaboration of our partners, the patience of our valued customers, and the unwavering dedication of our team throughout this outage,” said Funke Opeke, Managing Director of MainOne.

The successful repair of its submarine cable underscores MainOne’s commitment to its customers and its role in driving West Africa’s digital transformation.

MainOne was among the affected submarine communications cables. Others, including the West Africa Cable System (WACS) and the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), were slated to complete repairs on April 28 and April 17, respectively.
