Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has confirmed the full support of the majority caucus for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to select Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate for the upcoming December elections.
This endorsement follows a private meeting held on June 28 at the Vice President’s residence, where Dr. Bawumia discussed his choice with Afenyo-Markin.
In an interview on Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Afenyo-Markin detailed the caucus’s approval of Opoku Prempeh, who is currently serving as the Minister of Energy.
He noted that Dr. Bawumia had also consulted President Akufo-Addo, receiving positive feedback and aligning the party’s key organs on the decision.
A national council meeting is anticipated to formalize the selection, with Afenyo-Markin expressing confidence in a consensus being reached.
He urged his fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs to support the decision and be cautious in their public statements to maintain unity and strengthen the party’s prospects in the 2024 elections. Afenyo-Markin emphasized, “We’re in this together… None is perfect in this whole game, we may have our differences. And once a decision is made, it is made. We must all rally behind him, and make sure that we do the right thing.”
