Mallam-Kasoa Road: Storm drains to resolve flooding issues in 17 months. Explore the planned infrastructure improvements to address flooding concerns.

The Ghana Hydrological Authority has announced that the construction of storm drains to mitigate the persistent flooding on the Mallam-Kasoa Highway is projected to be finished in 17 months. This critical project aims to alleviate frequent traffic gridlocks caused by flooding, especially during heavy rains, disrupt traffic flow and endanger motorists and pedestrians.

The Mallam-Kasoa road, a vital transportation route in the region, has long suffered from severe flooding. In response to this issue, Roads Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye has committed to working with other ministries to address the crisis effectively.

Richard Kofi Ameko, Head of Drainage at the Ghana Hydrological Authority, detailed the planned interventions. “We’ve designed a size of 6/3 which is currently ongoing…we’ve also designed a catch pit, which will be deeper than the invert of the drain that will be constructed. We’ve completed phase one, and this is phase two of the 17-month project,” he explained. The project is specifically designed to reduce siltation and manage flooding on the highway.

Dr. Daniel Sowah, Works Engineer of the Ga South Municipal Assembly, added that the Ghana Highway Authority is also developing measures to control erosion and siltation. “They plan to reshape the hill, apply black soil, and plant grass over it to ensure that rainwater does not wash silt onto the road but flows down as water,” Dr. Sowah elaborated.

These efforts collectively aim to provide a long-term solution to the flooding issues, ensuring safer and more reliable transportation on the Mallam-Kasoa Highway.
