A self-proclaimed entrepreneur has been presented in the High Court in Accra, accused of planning and executing robberies targeting prominent individuals and affluent households.

Yahuza Osumanu, in addition to robbing a 76-year-old woman in Ridge, is charged with assaulting and robbing Matilda Yaaba Amissah Arthur, the wife of a former Vice President, by strangulation and repeatedly striking her head with his firearm.

The prosecution claims he escaped with GH₵28,000, £50, and $2,200 from the former Second Lady’s home. It’s further alleged that he conducted similar robberies using the same violent approach on wealthy individuals in upscale neighborhoods, resulting in the theft of valuables amounting to millions of Ghana cedis.

The prosecution revealed that among the stolen items were two Rolex watches valued at $61,000, two Cartier wristwatches valued at $19,000, an iPhone 15 Pro Max worth $1,000, and jewelry worth $50,000, among others. Furthermore, it was alleged that the accused used the proceeds from these crimes to purchase luxury vehicles and apartments for himself, including a Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Prado, and Lexus.

Led by Chief State Attorney Frances M. Ansah, the prosecution brought forth 26 charges of robbery and money laundering against the accused on April 16. Despite pleading not guilty during the court proceedings presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, the accused has been detained in prison custody until his next court appearance scheduled for May 2 of this year.

CSA Ansah outlined the case, revealing that in the second quarter of 2023, the Police CID received numerous reports of home invasions carried out by a lone armed perpetrator across various neighborhoods, including Airport, Cantonments, Tesano, and Ridge.
