Robinson was a familiar presence at the White House during Barack Obama’s presidency from 2009 to 2017, dedicating much of her time to caring for her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha. Michelle Obama described her mother as her “rock,” always supportive and steadfast for the entire family. In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Michelle Obama expressed the family’s sorrow and noted Robinson’s unwavering support throughout their lives.

Former President Barack Obama also paid tribute to his mother-in-law, praising her unique influence and the gift of her life. He acknowledged the family’s determination to honor her legacy by living up to her example.

Born in 1937, Marian Robinson was one of seven children in Chicago. She pursued a career in teaching before becoming a secretary. Together with her husband Frasier Robinson, she raised Michelle and their son Craig in Chicago’s South Side. Robinson’s presence was a constant source of strength as the family navigated unexpected paths, including Barack Obama’s historic election in 2008.

Robinson joined the Obama family in Washington D.C. after Barack Obama’s electoral victory, following encouragement from Michelle and Barack, who needed her support. She later reflected on her decision, motivated by concerns for her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.

Robinson adjusted to life in the White House, maintaining her independence by insisting on doing her own laundry and staying out of the public eye. She valued privacy, often opting to spend quiet moments in her room overlooking the Washington Monument rather than mingling with high-profile guests.

Despite her low profile, Robinson had a significant impact on her family. On Mother’s Day, shortly before her passing, Michelle Obama announced that an exhibit at the Obama Presidential Center Museum in Chicago would be dedicated to her mother. In a tribute, Michelle Obama credited Robinson with instilling in her a profound sense of confidence and independence.

Marian Robinson’s legacy is one of quiet strength and unwavering support, leaving an indelible mark on the Obama family and those who knew her.
