GH¢5 Million Defamation Case: Martha Ankomah and Lilwin Head to Court After Failed Settlement Attempt, Hearing Set for November 5

The GH¢5 million defamation lawsuit filed by actress Martha Ankomah against Kumawood actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, is set to proceed in court after efforts for an out-of-court settlement failed. The Accra High Court was informed by the plaintiff’s legal team, led by Nii Apatu Plange, that the defendant was not ready for settlement, leading to a request for the case to be heard.

Earlier in July 2024, there had been hope for a settlement, prompting an adjournment. However, those discussions have since collapsed, as Lilwin reportedly rejected the proposals. During the court session on October 15, 2024, Justice Forson Agyapong Baah acknowledged the plaintiff’s request and set the hearing date for November 5, 2024.

Lilwin, who has been accused of making disparaging remarks about Martha Ankomah in a viral video, was once again absent from the court, and no legal representation appeared on his behalf. The actress was present for the proceedings.

In the viral video at the center of the lawsuit, Lilwin allegedly insulted Ankomah, claiming she looked down on Kumawood actors and refused to work with them due to perceived issues with their storytelling quality. Martha Ankomah argues that these comments have defamed her character and damaged her association with the GTP brand.

As a result, Martha Ankomah is seeking:

GH¢5 million in damages for defamation

Compensation for the harm done to her reputation

Aggravated damages for what she claims was a reckless and malicious publication

An apology and retraction of the defamatory statements

An injunction to prevent further defamatory comments

Legal costs associated with the case

The court will begin hearing the case on November 5, 2024.
