In honor of May Day, commonly known as Workers’ Day around the world, the Ministry for the Interior has declared that Thursday, May 1, 2025, will be recognized as a formal public holiday across the country. The Ministry urged all citizens to respect the holiday in compliance with the Public Holidays Act in a formal statement signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.
“The general public is hereby reminded that Thursday, May 1, 2025, is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement emphasized.
May Day is widely acknowledged as a day to celebrate the accomplishments, hardships, and achievements of laborers. The day is commemorated in Ghana with marches, demonstrations, and speeches by government representatives and labor union leaders emphasizing the vital role that workers play in the country’s progress. As Ghanaian workers continue to fight for improved working conditions, fair salaries, job security, and occupational safety in the face of economic hardship, this year’s May Day celebration comes at a critical moment. It is anticipated that labor unions nationwide will take advantage of the event to intensify demands for stronger labor rights safeguards.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana is preparing to host the main national celebration, with details about the theme and venue to be announced shortly. The event will likely draw participation from workers across all sectors, demonstrating solidarity and the ongoing commitment to workers’ welfare.
May Day remains a significant moment for reflection, celebrating the resilience and dedication of workers in both the formal and informal sectors who are pivotal to Ghana’s growth and prosperity.
