May has been Designated as Mental Health Month

The Mental Health Authority designated May as Mental Health Awareness Month to raise awareness and combat stigma surrounding mental health in Ghana.

The initiative, dubbed the “Purple Month,” aims to promote mental wellness nationwide, aligning with similar campaigns in countries like the US and the UK.

The launch, themed “Movement: Moving more for our mental health,” emphasizes the correlation between physical activity and mental well-being. Collaborating with the Ministry of Health, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the campaign includes various activities such as maternal mental health awareness, school engagements, community outreach, workplace mental health education, and a health walk.

Estelle Appiah, Chairperson of the Mental Health Authority, highlighted the positive impact of regular physical activity on mood and stress levels. She also underscored the need for sustainable financing and adequate human resources to address mental health challenges.

Dr. Collins Badu Agyemang, President of the Ghana Physiological Association, advocated redirecting COVID-19 levy funds to bridge the mental health treatment gap. Lady Julia Osei Tutu emphasized the importance of open dialogue to overcome stigma and discrimination associated with mental health issues.

She expressed her commitment to promoting the independence and empowerment of vulnerable individuals, particularly focusing on maternal mental health advocacy. Dr. Ignatius Awinibuno, Director of Allied Health at the Ministry of Health, pledged continued support for mental health initiatives.
