In a dramatic showdown at the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Mfantsipim School narrowly defeated St. Augustine’s College by just one point, securing a final score of 47 to 46. The exhilarating finale, held in Cape Coast on Wednesday, kept audiences on edge as the two schools fought for supremacy in the prestigious academic contest, with Keta Senior High Technical School trailing behind with 32 points.

The competition reached its peak in the final “riddle round,” where Mfantsipim, down by two points, solved a crucial riddle to gain three points and clinch the victory. This last-minute win not only showcased the school’s resilience but also had the crowd erupting in celebration. Mfantsipim lived up to their slogan “Host and Win,” securing both the NSMQ trophy and a GH¢70,000 cash prize. Meanwhile, St. Augustine’s College received GH¢50,000 for second place, and Keta SHTS was awarded GH¢35,000 for their commendable third-place performance.

The competition saw intense scoring shifts: both Mfantsipim and St. Augustine’s were tied at 24 points in the opening round, while Keta trailed with 13 points. By round two, St. Augustine’s edged ahead with 34 points, keeping Mfantsipim close behind at 31, with Keta at 12 points. However, Mfantsipim’s last-minute riddle solution turned the tide, leading to their victory.

This year’s NSMQ marked a historic moment as it was held in Cape Coast for the first time, celebrating the educational excellence of the region. Since its 1993 inception, the NSMQ has evolved into Ghana’s leading academic event, inspiring STEM interest nationwide and drawing 157 participating schools this year, a record number. The 2024 NSMQ will be remembered not only for its fierce competition but also for the remarkable achievement of Mfantsipim School in this high-stakes contest.
