Miley Cyrus Becomes Youngest Disney Legend in Emotional D23 Ceremony
Miley Cyrus Becomes Youngest Disney Legend
In a poignant moment at the 2024 Disney Legends Awards, Miley Cyrus made history by becoming the youngest individual to receive the prestigious title of Disney Legend. The ceremony took place at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, on August 11, 2024. At 31 years old, Miley, known for her long brown hair, was visibly moved as she accepted the accolade amidst a backdrop of purple lights. Wearing an oversized black blazer with padded shoulders, she dabbed at her eyes, overwhelmed by the honor.
Miley Cyrus’s journey to becoming a Disney Legend began when she gained fame as Hannah Montana, a role she started playing at just 13 years old in 2006. The Disney Channel series, which showcased Miley as a teenage pop star living a double life, catapulted her to stardom. During her emotional speech at the event, Miley expressed her continued pride in her role as Hannah Montana. She reflected on her career, noting that while many aspects of her life and career have evolved, her appreciation for her role remains unchanged.
Earlier this year, Miley achieved another milestone with her Grammy win for “Flowers,” which was named Record of the Year for 2023 and topped the UK charts for ten weeks. Her speech at the Honda Center, where she was honored in front of a crowd of 12,000, was met with a standing ovation. Miley shared that although “a little bit of everything has changed” since her breakout role, “nothing has changed at all” in terms of her connection to the character that launched her career.
The ceremony featured a heartfelt tribute as country singer Lainey Wilson performed “The Best of Both Worlds,” one of Hannah Montana’s iconic songs. Miley became emotional as she recounted the early days of her career, describing how she was initially an unknown girl with big dreams. She reminisced about her first performance, which took place in a shopping mall where tickets were distributed for free. Miley humorously recalled her early days, saying, “In reality, I was a little girl in a blonde wig at the mall with a big dream. But in my heart, I was Hannah Montana and I was so proud to be.”
Miley dedicated her award to Hannah Montana and her devoted fans, stating, “This award is dedicated to Hannah and all of her amazing, loyal fans, and to everyone who has made my dream a reality. To quote the legend herself, ‘This Is The Life.'”
In a light-hearted moment, Miley also joked about Disney’s tendency to create stars, saying, “If I was [created in a lab], there must have been a bug in the system which caused me to malfunction somewhere between the years of 2013 and 2016.” This period marked a significant shift in her career as she released her fourth album, Bangerz, and performed a controversial duet with Robin Thicke at the MTV VMAs, a performance that stirred much debate.
The ceremony was not only a celebration of Miley Cyrus. Other notable honorees included Harrison Ford and Jamie Lee Curtis. Ford, acclaimed for his roles in Star Wars and Indiana Jones, expressed his delight and modesty at receiving the honor. The 82-year-old actor shared, “I have the privilege of being a storyteller, an assisted storyteller. I love the people I’ve had the opportunity to work with.”
Jamie Lee Curtis, who won an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All At Once, was introduced by Lindsay Lohan, her co-star from the 2003 film Freaky Friday. Curtis also became emotional, emphasizing that legends are not simply born but are nurtured and educated over time.
The event celebrated not just individuals but also contributions from across the Disney legacy, recognizing 14 new Disney Legends, including composer John Williams, costume designer Colleen Atwood, and Martha Blanding, Disneyland’s first full-time Black tour guide.
