A military officer serving in the Ghana Air Force has tragically passed away after collapsing during the 67th Independence anniversary celebrations held in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on Wednesday.

While participating in the parade, the officer, along with 66 others, collapsed and received immediate medical attention from onsite doctors. Eight individuals were subsequently transferred to the Eastern Regional Hospital for further treatment.

Sources from both the Eastern Regional Hospital and the Regional Ambulance Service have confirmed the deterioration of the military officer’s health, resulting in his untimely demise.

The Local Organizing Committee has expressed profound sorrow over the incident and is actively liaising with the military high command to inform them of the tragic loss.

In a separate incident at the Tamale Jubilee Park on the same day, a total of 72 people collapsed during the 67th Independence Parade. These individuals, including students, service personnel, and soldiers, are believed to have suffered severe dehydration due to the harsh weather conditions.

Standing under the scorching sun for prolonged periods likely contributed to their collapse. Fortunately, all 72 individuals were successfully resuscitated by paramedic staff, including Yakubu Amin Abukari, the northern regional head of the Ghana Red Cross Society, who was tasked with providing first aid at the regional Independence Day parade.
