Mobile Money Operators Threaten Strike
Latest News : Mobile Money Operators Threaten Strike Over Galamsey Crisis

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has issued a stern warning to the government, expressing concerns about the negative effects of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. Speaking on Channel One TV’s “I Stand Against Galamsey” campaign on Monday, September 16, MOMAG representatives stressed the urgent need for the government to take decisive action to curb the environmental destruction caused by these illegal activities.
The campaign aims to amplify the voices of various associations, unions, and organizations pushing for an end to galamsey. MOMAG criticized the government for its lack of meaningful intervention and issued an ultimatum, stating that if substantial changes are not made by the end of September, they will initiate a nationwide strike. The strike, according to the group, would disrupt mobile money transactions, bill payments, salary disbursements, and affect overall financial inclusion across the country.
Kingsley Amoako Atta, the National Secretary of MOMAG, emphasized the potential impact of such a protest and urged the government to respond swiftly. “If the government fails to act, MOMAG will have no option but to call for a nationwide strike, affecting various financial services,” he said.
MOMAG also outlined a list of demands, which include declaring a state of emergency over all water bodies, canceling mining leases that interfere with water bodies, enforcing laws governing mining activities, and providing alternative livelihoods for those involved in illegal mining. The group remains adamant that without these measures, the strike will proceed.
