SPORT NEWS : Mohammed Kudus Sent Off After Violent Confrontation in London Derby
West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus was issued a straight red card during his team’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 19, 2024, after a series of violent actions that marred the London derby. The incident unfolded as tensions flared, leading to Kudus striking two Spurs players in the face, prompting a review by VAR.
The drama began with Kudus trailing 4-1 in the match. Attempting to make a break down the right wing, he was easily dispossessed by Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven. In a bid to regain possession, Kudus fouled the center-back, but as Van de Ven went down, Kudus kicked out at him twice. Van de Ven, frustrated by the assault, pushed Kudus away before confronting him about his actions.
In response, the 24-year-old Kudus shoved Van de Ven in the face, escalating the situation and igniting a clash between players from both teams. Van de Ven fell to the ground, clutching his eye after being struck. Amid the chaos, Kudus inadvertently bumped into Tottenham’s Richarlison with the back of his head as Spurs players surrounded him.
Pape Sarr, attempting to defend his teammates, was also met with Kudus’s aggression, as he was shoved in the face, further demonstrating Kudus’s loss of composure during the incident. After several players managed to separate the teams, referee Andrew Madley initially issued yellow cards to both Kudus and Van de Ven.
However, VAR’s intervention led Madley to review the incident on the pitch, ultimately resulting in a red card for Kudus due to his violent conduct. This decision added to West Ham’s woes in what has already been a challenging season, leaving the team with just eight points from eight matches. Meanwhile, Tottenham’s victory allowed them to climb back into sixth place in the league standings.
