My Divorces Do Not Mark my Failure in Life - Funke Akindele

Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has shared that she doesn’t perceive her divorces as failures. In an interview with Wazobia FM in Lagos, she expressed her belief that setbacks are inherent in the journey to success, a lesson instilled by her mother. Akindele emphasized her commitment to embracing life and its experiences while prioritizing her mental well-being and flourishing career.

She highlighted her goal of leading an impactful life, leaving a positive influence on her children and the younger generation. Akindele underscored the significance of her mental health and career, stating, “My personal life – marriage, I just take it as it comes. My mental health is very important. My career is very important, darling. I have to make an impact. I have to empower a lot of people. I have to inspire young people out there.”

Acknowledging moments of vulnerability, she affirmed her resilience, saying, “Yes, I cry, yes, I break down, but after I cry, I just look in the mirror and say, ‘keep moving.’”

Akindele, initially married to Oloyede in 2012, experienced a brief marriage of 413 days, marked by issues of abuse. In 2016, she found love again and married music star Abdulrasheed Bello, known as JJC Skillz. However, their marriage ended in July 2022 after six years, despite achieving significant milestones together, including producing Nollywood’s highest-grossing movie, ‘Omo Ghetto: the Saga II,’ and founding the entertainment company SceneOne Production.

Addressing the divorce, Akindele disclosed that she learned about it from a friend while she was filming, a moment that initially devastated her. Despite facing challenges, she credited her resilience to her mother’s encouragement and urged caution in marriage decisions, advising against rushing into commitments.

This revelation comes amid speculation surrounding the cause of the divorce, with Akindele choosing not to disclose specific details. Meanwhile, she continued to pursue her political aspirations, running for the position of Deputy Governor of Lagos State during the last general election, though she did not succeed.
