Patience Gold, a Nigerian national and commercial sex worker, was sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Tarkwa Circuit Court in Ghana after considering the evidence provided by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Ahiabor, who led the prosecution.

Gold was found guilty of prostitution, illegal abortion, human trafficking, and forcing four young Nigerian women into sex work under abusive and exploitative conditions. According to the court’s findings, Gold offered bartending positions at her drinking establishment in Asankra-Moseaso, Ghana’s Western Region, between March 22 and March 27, 2025, luring victims from Benue State, Nigeria.

On arrival, however, the victims were forced into prostitution. Under coercion, Gold allegedly cut off their fingernails, shaved their pubic hair, and had them take a blood oath. She also allegedly threatened to drive them insane if they disobeyed her or failed to reimburse her for the expenses she said she had expended.

One of the victims was already pregnant when she traveled to Ghana, and Gold performed an illegal abortion by administering a herbal mixture to end her pregnancy. In order to keep clients, the convicted individual moved another victim who became ill and tested positive for HIV/AIDS. The afflicted woman continued to be coerced into performing sex labor, and Gold kept the money.

One of the victims was severely beaten by Gold on March 25, 2025, during a financial argument, resulting in face injuries and the seizure of her antiviral medication. Gold was arrested after the assaulted woman and the other victims reported the incident to the Asankrangwa Police. Gold will serve the maximum penalty of 20 years because the sentences will run consecutively even though he was found guilty on four different offenses. The case has brought to light the terrible realities of human trafficking as well as the pressing need for increased protection for vulnerable people, particularly migrant women, and increased vigilance.
