Bold Stand: Nigerian Youth Begin August 1 Protest Against Bad Governance

Today, August 1, 2024, Nigerian youth kick off a nationwide peaceful protest that will continue until August 10. Their aim is to demand effective leadership, affordable food, zero hunger, and a reduction in the cost of living. Despite warnings and opposition from some political figures, the movement is determined to address critical issues impacting the nation.
Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, is grappling with severe economic hardships, insecurity, poor infrastructure, and environmental degradation. The youth are mobilizing to spotlight these interconnected problems and urge the government to act swiftly.
Activist Banwo Olagokun, a member of the Take It Back Movement, expressed the urgency of the protest, stating, “We protest because we are hungry.” He highlighted how inflation has made basic necessities like food, water, clothing, and medical care increasingly unaffordable.

Currently, Nigeria is facing its worst economic crisis in a generation, with inflation rates soaring to 34.19%, the highest in nearly thirty years. Food prices have surged, with staples such as yams in Lagos costing almost four times more than last year. The Take It Back Movement is calling for government action to tackle the cost-of-living crisis and provide free education at all levels.
The protest has attracted significant attention from the government, leading to emergency meetings and appeals from President Bola Tinubu for patience. However, protest organizers, led by Juwon Sanyaolu, remain resolute. “Nigerians are resilient, and we will protest for our rights,” Sanyaolu affirmed.
Today marks a crucial moment as Nigerian youth take a bold stand to demand accountability and a better future.
