A group comprising New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives, grassroots members, and non-party individuals, staunch supporters of Dr. Mahammudu Bawumia, the party’s Flagbearer, have issued a call for respect towards his autonomy in selecting his running mate without undue pressure.
Identified as the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia, the group has urged Dr. Bawumia to resist external pressures from various factions within the party, which have been lobbying for their preferred candidates to be chosen as his running mate.
They have criticized certain activities and tactics employed by factions within the party, including press conferences, persistent delegations to Dr. Bawumia, petitions, and threatening remarks in the media, aimed at coercing Dr. Bawumia into selecting their favored candidate as his running mate.
The group emphasized that such actions imply a lack of confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to independently decide on his running mate, thereby undermining his leadership and autonomy.
The leadership of the Patriotic Movement for Bawumia advised Dr. Bawumia to maintain his reputation as a leader with a clear vision and to have the courage to select a running mate whom he believes is best suited to join him in contesting the 2024 presidential race.
They cautioned that yielding to pressure from certain party groups and members could lead to disunity within the party and long-standing fractures in its structure, potentially jeopardizing the NPP’s chances of success in the upcoming presidential election.
The group expressed disappointment with party members who, instead of supporting Dr. Bawumia, are engaged in pressuring him to select a particular running mate.
They also cautioned individuals with interests in becoming Dr. Bawumia’s running mate against employing tactics that are inconsistent with the NPP’s operating principles, urging them to refrain from sponsoring groups or individuals to forcefully influence Dr. Bawumia’s decision.
The group emphasized that the selection of a running mate is solely the prerogative of the flagbearer and should not be done under duress.
In a firm statement, the group declared its displeasure with recent endorsements made on behalf of individuals vying to become Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, urging him to disregard such endorsements.
They concluded by reiterating their trust in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and urged him to select a running mate based on merit and capability, with the aim of leading the NPP to victory in the 2024 presidential election.
