NPP Rallies in Accra Over Chief Justice Suspension Shock

On Monday, May 5, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a coalition of affiliated political parties staged a major public protest in Accra in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. The demonstration, which started in a parking lot across from the Supreme Court and proceeded along many important streets of the capital, was characterized by its organizers as a defense of Ghana’s democratic integrity and judicial independence.

A political tempest has been sparked by Chief Justice Torkornoo’s suspension, with detractors charging the president with abusing his authority and weakening the judiciary. Wearing branded T-shirts and holding placards, protesters expressed their disapproval and called for the president’s decision to be immediately overturned. The protesters contend that the Chief Justice’s dismissal without following the proper procedures creates a risky precedent and jeopardizes Ghana’s democratic foundations.

The National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), Ghana Union Movement (GUM), and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) were among the major groups who joined the NPP in the protest. These parties have come together because they share the conviction that political meddling must be avoided in the judiciary’s independence.

The protest’s organizers stressed that it was more than a symbolic event. The movement’s leaders declared their intention to formally petition Parliament and the Office of the President for the immediate reinstatement of Chief Justice Torkornoo and for legislative changes to protect judicial independence.

Growing tensions between the executive branch and political opponents over the separation of powers are highlighted by this protest, which is one of the most well-organized opposition actions since the Chief Justice’s suspension. Protest organizers reaffirmed their dedication to nonviolent activism and promised to keep advocating until constitutional order is restored as the rally came to an end.
