The New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing persistent concerns about alleged bias and lack of professionalism in the group’s political coverage, has formally announced its withdrawal from all Media General-run media platforms.

According to a statement signed by Richard Ahiagbah, the party’s director of communications, the NPP disclosed that it has been corresponding with the media general since 2023 in order to resolve allegations of unfair treatment. Biased hosting techniques, imbalanced panel discussions, and frequent verbal abuse of prominent NPP individuals are among the issues brought forward. Media General has made multiple promises to address these concerns, but the party says they have continued.

An incident involving a show hosted by Keminni Amanor was one of the main complaints brought up by the NPP. The party claims the host did not adequately dispute or moderate a guest’s provocative remarks about former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the show.

Furthermore, the NPP attacked well-known political shows like Key Points and Newday, claiming that they often put together discussion panels that unfairly benefit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). According to the party, this has led to an uneven media landscape in which their representatives are routinely underrepresented and outnumbered.

“Despite repeated assurances since 2023, the observed unprofessionalism and unfairness persist,” the statement read. The NPP said that their attempts to demand impartial and balanced coverage had gone unnoticed. Consequently, the party has made the resolute choice to permanently withdraw from all Media General platforms.

Until further notice, the NPP has directed all party members to abide by this directive. The party did, however, reassure the public and its members that this action would not compromise its dedication to maintaining democracy, accountability, and openness in government.

Reactions to the withdrawal have been divided, with some political observers wondering if it will restrict the party’s media presence before the 2024 elections. But for others, it represents a daring stand against what the party considers to be unjust journalistic practices.

How Media General reacts to these accusations is still up in the air. Political analysts will be keenly observing how this action affects Ghana’s media environment in general, especially with relation to fair political discourse.
