NSA Purges Ghost Names, Saves GH¢1M in Payroll Shocker!
National Service Authority’s (NSA)

The Ghanaian government has saved a substantial amount of money, estimated at more than GH¢1 million, as a result of the National Service Authority‘s (NSA) successful removal of more than 2,000 phantom identities from its payroll. Felix Gyamfi, the Director-General of the NSA, revealed this development and stressed that the exercise was a part of a stepped-up effort to encourage honesty, accountability, and openness inside the national service program.

He clarified that in order to avoid the recurrence of duplicate or unauthorized entries, all data pertaining to national service personnel will now be sent to the Controller and Accountant General’s Department for cross-checking.

Gyamfi also sent a strong warning to anyone who may be working in the military, immigration agency, or police but is still trying to receive national service benefits. He warned that since the NSA is now working closely with the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and other state security agencies to apprehend and prosecute anyone found guilty of payroll fraud, such individuals should not submit their allowance claims for the month.

President John Dramani Mahama ordered a more extensive investigation when it was revealed that 81,885 ghost names had been found on the NSA payroll. This payroll cleansing effort follows that probe. In order to settle long-standing arrears owing to military personnel since August 2024, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson launched a countrywide audit, during which the disclosure was made.

The Fourth Estate first revealed the problem in an investigative article published in November 2024. Several former NSA directors engaged in the incident will be charged, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has now revealed. Notably, the NIB questioned former NSA Executive Director Osei Assibey on March 20 on his suspected involvement in the payroll fraud. In tow was his legal representative.

This crackdown marks a significant step toward restoring public confidence in the national service scheme and ensuring the judicious use of state funds.
