Parliament Approves Dr. Omane Boamah as Defence Minister-Designate

The appointment of Dr. Edward Omane Boamah as Ghana’s Minister-Designate for Defence has been formally confirmed by the Parliament. Following a rigorous screening procedure and the approval of the Appointments Committee’s ninth report, the decision was made. The approval procedure was not without controversy, even though the Appointments Committee’s recommendation was unanimous. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, voiced reservations about the Committee Clerk’s behaviour. He charged that the Clerk had left out important quotes from Dr. Omane Boamah’s official report. Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, vehemently denied the charges and suggested that any complaints be handled through the appropriate means rather than by making personal attacks.

This approval is part of a broader set of ministerial confirmations that took place on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. Parliament also approved the nomination of Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as the Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources. Additionally, three regional ministers-designate were confirmed for their respective positions:

Tia Ibrahim – North East Region

Dr. Frank Amoakohene – Ashanti Region

Akamugri Atanga Donatus – Upper East Region

Parliament carefully evaluated the credentials, background, and suitability for service of these recently selected ministers-designate via a rigorous screening procedure. The ministers-designate are now anticipated to formally take on their positions after receiving their approval, collaborating closely with regional and national authorities to carry out programs and promote growth. They will be in charge of managing Ghana’s natural resources, supervising defence plans, and advancing social and economic development in their respective areas.
